Truth be told, I have always loved to dance. I studied classical ballet for twelve years along with tap and jazz. I have taken almost every type of dance class there is to take, from salsa, to hip-hop, line dancing, and ballroom. When I turned forty-something, I wanted to continue my love of dance in a more "mature" environment where I could also enjoy my favorite types of music. With that in mind, I decided to learn how to step. Four years later, When You Step was born. I decided that the happenings on the stepping scene simply had to be shared. Then I thought, "What better way to do that than to reveal an embellished, exaggerated, emotional, and entertaining version of my personal journey into the world of stepping?" Best thing about it...this is only the beginning.
Even though I did all of the writing, I must give thanks where thanks is due. I must first thank God for granting me a sound mind and the ability to put words to paper. I thank my beautiful, smart, and funny daughters, Jessica Grace and Jayna Isabel, for their critiques and commentary, both solicited and not. I love you both to the moon and back. As for my favorite stepping instructor, Dwight, thank you for having faith and confidence in me when I did not and encouraging me to "just write it!" You are my one and only. Essential shout-outs to each of the phenomenal women in my life: Ella, DeAnn, Dawn, Kirstin, Ruby, Jackie, Kim, Tasha, Val, Phyllis, Vandella, Jeaneane, Sondra, Heidi, and Theresa. Thank you for being that brilliant, wonderfully diverse, animated, vibrant, and entertaining group that has provided the collective inspiration only for the most delightful characters in this story. You all bring joy to my world and I am so blessed to have you in it.
Thank you to the oh-so-talented renowned artist, Synthia Saint James, who was gracious and kind enough to read my book and offer her congratulations and praise. Thank you to Markie Bee, editor extraordinaire, who took time out of his busy schedule to share priceless words of wisdom. Last, but certainly not least, a loud Delta Sigma Theta thank you to my Omega Psi Phi brother, Marty Majeske, who put his valuable artistic stamp of approval on my first endeavor as a writer.
On that note, thanks in advance to all who have read and will read my book. It has truly been a good time, and I hope that fact shines through on the page. Enjoy!
